Tackling Sickness with Vitamin C

Vitamin CRumors of effective Covid treatment with high doses of vitamin C have been tugging at the curious part of me for months. So, I decided to go deep and find out if there really was anything to them. What I found was at first shocking and then compelling. Here is the short version.

A Bit of Vitamin C History

The basis for preventing and combating viral illness with high doses of vitamin C has been around for a long time—since way back in the late 1940s when it was discovered that it could be used as a successful treatment against polio. If you are like me, then you will be as shocked as I was to see the papers corroborating this. The full force of the clinical evidence accrued over the next few decades, resulting in an anti-virus protocol for vitamin C being published in 1980. Thus the efficacy of preventing and treating respiratory infections with large amounts of this vitamin has been well established

“When proper amounts are used it [vitamin C] will destroy all virus organisms.” – Dr. Frederick R Klenner (1974)

Go Read It For Yourself

This is easy to miss, perhaps because of how commonplace vitamin C is. Most of us who believe that it will help us through a cold will raise our eyebrows if told that it can reverse pneumonia or douse the flu. Yet, after reading much of the research for myself, all I can say is that any doubters must take the time to go read the papers. It is one of the most studied substances in history.

And it’s not just pneumonia. Dr. Klenner documented vitamin C’s ability to reliably cure many different acute infectious diseases and to neutralize toxins when the dose was large enough and the treatment long enough. The following is a list of the conditions that Dr. Klenner successfully treated with aggressive vitamin C therapy:

  • Pneumonia
  • Encephalitis
  • Herpes Zoster (shingles)
  • Herpes Simplex
  • Mononucleosis
  • Pancreatitis
  • Hepatitis
  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
  • Bladder Infection
  • Alcoholism
  • Arthritis
  • Some Cancers
  • Leukemia
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Ruptured Intervertebral Disc
  • High Cholesterol
  • Corneal Ulcer
  • Diabetes
  • Glaucoma
  • Schizophrenia
  • Burns and secondary infections
  • Heat Stroke
  • Radiation Burns
  • Heavy Metal Poisoning (Mercury, Lead)
  • Venomous Bites (insects, snakes)
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Complications of Surgery

Many doctors have added their voices to the effectiveness of this simple and inexpensive treatment:

“I have not seen any flu yet that was not cured or markedly ameliorated by massive doses of vitamin C.” – Dr. Robert F. Cathcart

“Any physician, or panel of hospital-based physicians, claiming that vitamin C is experimental, unapproved, and/or posing unwarranted risks to the health of the patient, is really only demonstrating a complete and total ignorance or denial of the scientific literature. A serious question as to what the real motivations might be in withholding such a therapy then arises. Ignorance of medical factors is ultimately no sound defense for a doctor withholding valid treatment, especially when that information can be easily accessed.” – Dr. Thomas Levy

“I strongly believe that the correct application of ascorbic acid will fundamentally change our mortality statistics, including cancer too. This is why considering vitamin C a medicine—which is sold in ‘mg’ tablets by pharmacists–should be ceased. It should be kept in every household, and it should be found on the same shelves of the grocery store as a sugar, salt, and flour. The ascorbic acid powder should be sold by the pound. Ascorbic acid is the kind of vitamin that must be consumed as food.“
– Dr. Albert Szent-Györgyi

“Rescue therapy with high-dose vitamin C can also be considered.” – Lancet Respir Med, “Treatment for severe acute respiratory distress syndrome from COVID-19,” March 20, 2020

Why Vitamin C?

First, one should see a doctor if they are really sick. A diagnosis is a valuable tool. However, even if one is taking an antibiotic or another antimicrobial, sufficient quantities of vitamin C should always be part of any protocol for all infections, acute or chronic. This is because vitamin C:

  • Significantly improves immune function in nearly two dozen ways, as clearly shown by Dr. Thomas Levy
  • Fights inflammation by decreasing free radicals to minimize acute inflammation and fight chronic inflammation
  • Attacks pathogens by driving the Fenton reaction
  • Neutralizes toxins associated with infection
  • Keeps infection from gobbling up all of the body’s vitamin C reserves and prevents infection-induced pre-scurvy or even scurvy
  • Is an excellent antipyretic, lowering fever by eliminating its cause

Consider the Goat and Be Wise

The wisdom of megadosing vitamin C really hit home when I saw how much of it cows and goats make (though humans can’t make their own, most animals can). Both regularly make 12,000-13,000 mg of vitamin C a day—but when goats are stressed or ill, they can make up to 1,400 mg per kilogram per day. Depending on the size of the goat, that’s 100,000-200,000 mg a day! That should be a strong clue to humans as to our need for large doses of vitamin C when we are sick.

“The use of vitamin C in measles proved to be a medical curiosity. During an epidemic, vitamin C was used prophylactically and all those who received as much as 1000 mg every six hours, by vein or muscle, we’re protected from the virus.” – Dr. Frederick R Klenner (1949)

How Much C Is Enough C?

In times of sickness, stress, or immunization* it is important to increase vitamin C levels to therapeutic saturation, a level that is recognized as bowel tolerance. The only way to know how much one needs is to take as much as they can, as often as they can but not so much as to cause loose stool. When one is sick they may need 1000 mg doses (or more) taken close together, varying from every 15 minutes to every couple hours or so. When they get to the point where there is a rumbling of the tummy or they’re gassy they’re close enough to the therapeutic dose. They don’t have to take enough to cause diarrhea. Rumbling or gassiness is the indicator.

“Bowel tolerance: an indicator of oral dose vitamin C saturation. Bowel tolerance is indicated by gas, a rumbling stomach, or slightly loose stool. If you take way too much C, very loose stool will result, but goes away once doses are reduced. When bowel tolerance is reached, back off the extra C.” – Dr. Robert F. Cathcart

Why Is Reaching Bowel Tolerance Important?

Bowel tolerance is essential because it is where one finds relief from symptoms. The sicker one is, the more ascorbic acid they can hold before they get to the saturation point indicated by a loose bowel. If one’s body needs 30,000 mg of vitamin C to fight an infection, 8,000 mg won’t cut it. It is important to realize that Vitamin C is not being used as a prophylactic here but in a way that it is vastly underutilized: as an antiviral and antibacterial drug. That’s why one must take enough, often enough, and long enough. Andrew Saul likes to repeat the jingle, “You take enough C to be symptom-free, whatever that might be.” In critical illness, this could go upwards of 100,000 mg! With serious lung, throat, or sinus infections it may be wise to nebulize vitamin C along with oral dosing, delivering it more directly to the embattled site.

“The maximum relief of symptoms which can be expected with oral doses of ascorbic acid is obtained at a point just short of the amount which produces diarrhea. Stressful conditions of any kind greatly increase utilization of vitamin C.” – Dr. Robert F. Cathcart

Mega Vitamin C Protocol

When sick, start with a larger dose in the morning—maybe 3000 to 4000 mg—then continue taking 1000 mg per hour through the day. If that doesn’t stop the symptoms in a couple of hours then up it to 2000 mg per hour (or 1000 mg every half hour). Take it up from there until relief—or bowel tolerance—is found. Since vitamin C can be exhausted from the system very quickly when one is sick, it’s important to spread out the doses over the day. One should always take some with them wherever they go so that if they start to get sick away from home they can begin taking it immediately.

Whether one starts taking vitamin C in the morning or at the onset of sickness midday, there are two indicators of the appropriate dosage: relief of symptoms and/or bowel tolerance. If relief of symptoms comes first, then stay steady at that level until the tummy rumbles. At that point drop the intake to around 2/3 of the dose and take it less often until bedtime. Don’t be afraid to go up to very high doses, very close together (like every 5 or 10 minutes), if tolerance dictates them. Historical records from the American Association of Poison Control Centers show that taking high doses of vitamin C is extremely safe.

Depending on how sick we are, it may take days to resolve illness. Even if one feels better the next day, it is wise to take a good 7000 to 10,000 mg for the next couple of days to make sure the illness is good and gone. For the cautious, just keep it at bowel tolerance for a few days.

Expensive Isn’t Necessary

Don’t worry about getting expensive vitamin C. An inexpensive ascorbic acid that is a pure pharmaceutical grade, non-irradiated, and has no fillers is generally well tolerated and works just as well as a spendy high-tech vitamin C. Everyone is different though, so the best vitamin C is the one that agrees with the body. Though ascorbic acid powders are certainly the least expensive when massive doses are necessary, capsules are more convenient for everyday doses.

It is important to realize that Vitamin C is not being used as a prophylactic here but in a way that it is vastly underutilized: as an antiviral and antibacterial drug.

Though you can buy ascorbic acid that comes from a non-GMO source, Andrew Saul believes that it really isn’t necessary:

“Even if the ascorbic acid molecule comes from GMOs, which I disapprove of, it is still molecularly OK. You cannot genetically modify carbon, hydrogen, or oxygen atoms. And, you cannot genetically modify the physics of the bonds between them. ‘Genetic’ modification is about genes. Genes are enormous. They are made up of many, many DNA molecules, and DNA molecules are themselves huge. All of these are vastly larger than vitamin C. If you stretched it out, your DNA is nearly as tall as you are. Just try doing that with a vitamin C molecule. There are no GMO factors in C6H8O6. None.”

Take It For A Spin and See For Yourself

The bottom line here is that seriously large and persistent doses of vitamin C can effectively and quickly resolve many of the ailments that we have suffered over the years—including some of the chronic ones. I encourage you to add it to your existing protocol for your ailments—acute or chronic—and give it a spin. Take it up to saturation and see for yourself the miracle of vitamin C. It can’t hurt you—and it could increase your quality of life dramatically.

*Helen Saul Case watched megadoses of vitamin C save her daughter from a severe vaccine reaction that could have killed her. Don’t vaccinate without vitamin C. It not only prevents side effects but also increases the effectiveness of the vaccine. Andrew Saul believes that the vascular clotting and inflammatory problems caused by the Covid vaccines are very close to the symptoms of scurvy. He says the vaccine likely causes a vitamin C deficiency—an acute induced scurvy—to a dangerous or deadly degree in a few. I’ve been puzzling over the clot issue for a while now and this is the best explanation I’ve heard. Regardless, it is always good to take high doses of vitamin C before, during, and after vaccination–and mandatory if you experience severe symptoms after immunization.

  1. Brent. Thank you for writing this article! I’ve been mega dosing on vitamin c for several weeks now and it’s helped heal my lungs.. a lingering symptom from COVID.

    1. That is so cool! I have another client who was struggling with “long Covid” who experienced the same miraculous recovery. Saturation vitamin C is a miracle worker!

  2. Thank you for this excellent history and info on vitamin C! I will be fearlessly adding more to my daily regimen and sharing this article with others.

    1. Sharing is so important because even though most know about vitamin C, they really don’t know just how powerful it really is. It can heal so many viral infections, not only the common cold and the flu, but also serious ones like shingles, AIDS, and pneumonia.
